2025 is the new 2010
In 1991 there was just one website ("The World Wide Web Project"). It is still available today.
Between 1991 and 2024 an astounding 1,119,023,272 websites were built.
Today, over 5 billion people use The Internet, demonstrating it's incredible utility in the real world.
There are currently 1.1 Billion websites on The Internet. Each one is like a space you visit, whether to shop, read, chat, or watch videos. Now imagine a similar system, but instead of flat web pages, you move through 3D spaces. These spaces could be shops, offices, learning environments, or even entire virtual cities. This is what many are calling the Metaverse.
Just like websites are built using shared standards so they can be accessed from any browser, the same will happen with these 3D worlds. They’ll be connected, and people will be able to move from one to another just as easily as clicking a link. It won’t happen overnight, but this future is already taking shape.
Alongside this, augmented reality (AR) is steadily growing. Devices like smart glasses will overlay digital information onto the real world - directions on the street, product info on shelves, and even help from a remote colleague. These AR experiences won’t sit separate from the 3D internet. They’ll be part of the same connected network, bridging the physical and digital seamlessly.
For companies, this opens up a new kind of presence. Just like you needed a website in the 2000s, you’ll eventually need a space in the 3D internet. Early adopters will learn fast, build brand recognition, and be ready when this becomes the norm.
Predictions are that The Metaverse will grow at a CAGR of 46.4% from 2025 to 2030, making 2025 the Metaverse’s 2010 of website growth.
Rather than being about rushing in, it’s about starting to explore. Whether it’s a simple 3D showroom, a virtual event, or an AR experience tied to your product, dipping your toes in now means you’ll be better placed as things evolve. This new layer of the internet is coming, so it’s best to be ready and established when it arrives.
